John Grey Wine Competition Postponed

UMGS News -  24 April 2010

Results of the May Day Cup
Exceptionally warm weather for April boosted the number of competitors for the May Day Cup to 24.  With 8 groups playing, it was good to see the course busy with golfers exploring all parts of the course. The winning score was a net 56 for Rubin Hart, earning himself a full shot cut and some scrutiny from the handicap secretary.  Runner-up was an "on form" John Parsons with a net 57 and a further cut in his handicap.  Well done both.  Good to see two new competitors as well. Just two birdies were recorded, sharing a pot of £11.50.

Dates for the diary
Wed 26 May - Day out to Forest of Dean (sign up in the hut!)
Saturday 10 July - Annual Barbeque - there is a sheet in the hut inviting people to choose between "golf" and "relax".

Next competition

The Maurice Darwell Cup will take place on Sun 9 May starting at 8.00 am  - sign up in the hut or just turn up.

Gerry White Knockout Matchplay
The draw has now taken place. 23 players entered, and the competition will be played over 5 rounds.  The draw was seeded so that those with lower handicaps win a bye in the first round (which must be played by 6 June). The results of the draw are attached to this e-mail, and will be posted in the hut, along with full instructions.

UMGS News - 11 April 2010

Results of the E Parsons Cup
Fine spring weather brought out 16 competitors for the E Parsons Cup on 11 April.  Winner with a net 57 was, fittingly, John Parsons, who earned himself another 0.4 off his handicap.  Runner up on 59 was John Grey.  As there were just two players within 2 strokes of the Standard Scratch Score of 57, the Competition Scratch Score (from which handicap adjustments are made) rose to 59. There were 6 birdies recorded, sharing a pot of £7.50.

Dates for the diary
Wed 26 May - Day out to Forest of Dean (sign up in the hut!)
Saturday 10 July - Annual Barbeque (details to follow)

Next competition

Sat 24 April - "May Day" Cup - sign up in the hut or just turn up.

The draw for the Matchplay will take place before the end of April - last chance to sign up is the 24th of April.

Hut News

The college has prepared a plan showing where our new hut (5m by 5.5m) could be located - subject to planning and finding the funds!  A copy is on the noticeboard in the hut.

- The greens will be slit-tined in the next week or so.

- Days out have been arranged at Forest of Dean Golf Club (26 May) and Cirencester Golf Club (28 August). Costs are £36 and £46 respectively, but there will be discount of £6 for the outing to Cirencester, bringing the cost to a very reasonable £40.

- A new barbecue will be purchased from club funds for the summer barbeque - date to be fixed once the College Fete date is known.

- It was agreed at the Members Group meeting to plant a tree in memory of Ian.

Ian Carling

Our greenkeeper and keen member, Ian Carling, passed away on 24 December 2009.

The funeral will be at Gloucester Crematorium on Monday 11 Janaury at 13.30. Ian's family has kindly donated a new cup - the Ian Carling Cup - which we will compete for in September, and also a bench which will be positioned on the course.

Course update - October 2009

Top dressing of the red greens has been completed, and it should be possible to reopen all the greens in the next few weeks. It will also be necessary to spray at some point and it may take until the Spring for the benefits of the treatment to be realised.

Course update - August 2009

Our budget at Ullenwood is under £40,000 a year, with subscriptions of £25,000 and greenfees of £11,000. We have one full time position as green keeper and two helpers on 6 month contract in the summer. Our capital spend over the last 4 years has been on horse power (two tractors). Only in he last month we have spent £10,000 on a ride-on mower for the fairways and surrounds, which will replace the gang mowers pulled behind a tractor. These are over 30 years old and were costing £2000 a year in maintenance and sharpening costs. The fairways have already shown an improvement in the last few days. The rough has been exceptionally high this year as the poor weather did not allow the gang mowers to be used when we wanted to. The greens have suffered from blight and will be sprayed when we have some sustained dry weather forecast or else the exercise is not effective. The thatch build up will not allow proper drainage so we have agreed with Cotswold Hills G.C. for them to vertidrain them, starting with the blues in the next week or so weather permitting. These will then be top dressed for the first time ever. The top dressing was delivered late last week.
Our subscriptions have not be raised for 3 years, the £15 increase (28p a week) is some 8%
(equivalent to 2.6% a year). I do not expect to raise them for at least 2 more years.

Richard Greenwell
